چکیده

We describe the Disk Chopper Spectrometer (DCS) at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). The maximum measured flux at the sample, averaged over the 3 cm width and 10 cm height of the beam, with all choppers turning at 20,000 revolutions per minute and phased to transmit neutrons through the widest slots on each disk, is approximately 3 10 n cm 2 s . In this configuration the elastic resolution FWHM (full width at half maximum height) with an incident wavelength of 6 A is 67 leV. In an alternative configuration, achieved by changing the chopper phases so that neutrons pass through somewhat narrower slots, the elastic resolution FWHM at 6 A is 34 leV. Useful wavelengths range from about 1.5 A to at least 12 A. The DCS has been used for a variety of measurements, including quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) studies of systems such as water in confined geometries and biological molecules in solution. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The new cold neutron chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source: design and performance.

The design and performance of the new cold neutron chopper spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge are described. CNCS is a direct-geometry inelastic time-of-flight spectrometer, designed essentially to cover the same energy and momentum transfer ranges as IN5 at ILL, LET at ISIS, DCS at NIST, TOFTOF at FRM-II, AMATERAS at J-PARC, PHAROS at LANSCE, and NEAT at HZB, at ...

Design and operation of the wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source.

The wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is optimized to provide a high neutron flux at the sample position with a large solid angle of detector coverage. The instrument incorporates modern neutron instrumentation, such as an elliptically focused neutron guide, high speed magnetic bearing choppers, and a massive array of (3)He linear position sensi...

A molecular view of melting in anhydrous phospholipidic membranes.

A high-flux backscattering spectrometer and a time-of-flight disk chopper spectrometer are used to probe the molecular mobility of model freeze-dried phospholipid liposomes at a range of temperatures surrounding the main melting transition. Using specific deuteration, quasielastic neutron scattering provides evidence that, in contrast to the hydrocarbon chains, the headgroups of the phospholipi...

Ultra-High Resolution Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Two types of ultra high energy resolution neutron scattering instruments, the backscattering spectrometer and the spin echo spectrometer, are described. Examples of the types of research which can be done with these instruments are given and plans for a cold neutron backscattering spectrometer which will be built in the NIST Cold Neutron Research Facility (CNRF) are discussed. It is hoped that ...

Incoherent Quasielastic Neutron Scattering study of hydrogen diffusion in thorium–zirconium hydrides

Monophase thorium–zirconium hydrides (ThZr2Hx) have been fabricated starting from a metallic alloy and the hydrogen stoichiometry determined by X-ray diffraction. Incoherent Quasielastic Neutron Scattering (IQNS) on the hydrides was conducted over the temperature range 650–750 K at the Backscattering Silicon Spectrometer (BASIS) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL. The isotropic Chud...
